The district's flagship — SM East — is one of the top public high schools in Kansas. SM's broader portfolio is more varied in reputation than Blue Valley, but the individual schools that serve OP (particularly SM East) are excellent.

Blue Valley North High School
BV North is the district's flagship and one of the most sought-after public high schools in the Kansas City metro. Located near 119th and Antioch, BVN serves Deer Creek, Leawood South, and central south OP. The school has a reputation for academic rigor, with one of the highest AP exam pass rates in the state. Athletics are strong across the board, and the school's debate and speech programs are nationally competitive.
Blue Valley West High School
BV West serves the 119th-to-143rd corridor and is known for balancing strong academics with standout performing arts and athletics programs. Private & Parochial Options
Overland Park has several notable private school options for families who prefer alternatives to public schools. Barstow School (pre-K through 12) is a co-ed independent school known for academic rigor and small class sizes. St. Thomas Aquinas (Catholic, grades 9-12) is one of the largest and most competitive private high schools in the metro, with strong athletics and academics. Maranatha Christian Academy, Heartland Community Church School, and several Catholic elementary schools (Christ the King, Good Shepherd) also serve the OP area. Blue Valley vs Shawnee Mission is the defining school choice in OP. Both are excellent, but they serve different buyer profiles. Blue Valley is the "safe bet" — uniformly strong across all 5 high schools, newer facilities, higher per-pupil spending. SM's strength is concentrated: SM East is arguably the best individual high school in JoCo, but the district's other schools (SM South, SM Northwest) are solid rather than elite. Compared to the Missouri side, both districts significantly outperform KCMO public schools in every measurable metric. Lee's Summit and Parkville on the MO side are the closest competition, but JoCo parents generally consider the Kansas side's school funding model (higher property taxes = more per-pupil spending) to be worth the premium.
